When people first consider ADHD coaching, they often hope for a breakthrough moment.

A session where everything suddenly clicks into place. A magical solution that untangles years of overwhelm, procrastination, self-doubt, and frustration.

And while coaching can absolutely create powerful breakthroughs, the truth is that lasting change often begins somewhere much quieter.

Sometimes, the biggest shift isn’t fixing everything.

It’s finally taking the first step forward.

The Pressure to Have It All Figured Out

Many adults with ADHD spend years trying to force themselves into systems and strategies that simply don’t work for their brains.

They buy planners they never use.

Download productivity apps.

Create detailed routines that last a few days before falling apart.

Each time something doesn’t work, they often assume the problem is them.

They tell themselves they need more discipline, more willpower, or better time management.

But ADHD isn’t a motivation problem.

It’s a difference in how the brain manages attention, planning, prioritisation, memory, and regulation.

When you’re using tools designed for neurotypical brains, it’s no wonder things can feel difficult.

A Recent Coaching Session

Recently, I worked with a client who arrived at our session feeling stuck.

She had lots of ideas, lots of intentions, and plenty of motivation.

What she didn’t have was a system that felt manageable.

Everything felt scattered.

She knew there were things she wanted to change, but she wasn’t sure where to begin.

By the end of our session, we hadn’t solved every challenge in her life.

We hadn’t created a perfect plan.

We hadn’t fixed everything.

What we had done was create clarity.

Together, we identified what was actually important to focus on, explored what was getting in the way, and built a practical system that felt creative, realistic, and ADHD-friendly.

One of the most powerful things she said at the end of our session was:

“It’s okay that it takes time. I’m building something, and I don’t have to get it perfect straight away.”

That shift in mindset can be transformational.

Why Perfection Often Keeps People Stuck

Many adults with ADHD have spent years feeling like they’re constantly falling behind.

As a result, it’s common to develop perfectionist tendencies.

If something can’t be done perfectly, it can feel safer not to start at all.

If a new system isn’t flawless, it must be wrong.

If progress isn’t immediate, it must not be working.

But sustainable change rarely happens that way.

Progress is often built through experimentation, self-awareness, and small adjustments over time.

Coaching helps create space for that process.

Instead of asking, “How do I fix everything?”

    The question becomes:

“What is the next step that will help me move forward?”

What ADHD Coaching Actually Helps With

Contrary to popular belief, ADHD coaching isn’t about telling you what to do.

It’s about helping you understand how your brain works and finding approaches that work with it.

    That might involve:

    • Reducing overwhelm
    • Improving organisation and planning
    • Building self-trust
    • Managing procrastination
    • Creating sustainable routines
    • Improving work-life balance
    • Understanding emotional regulation
    • Reducing shame and self-criticism

Most importantly, it’s about creating strategies that fit your life rather than trying to force yourself into someone else’s system.

    The Power of One Step

We often underestimate the value of small shifts.

    A new perspective.

A clearer understanding of what’s happening.

    A strategy that feels achievable.

Permission to stop striving for perfection.

These things might seem small, but they can create momentum.

    And momentum creates change.

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

You don’t need the perfect system.

You don’t need to know exactly what the future looks like.

Sometimes, the most important thing is simply taking the first step.

    Could ADHD Coaching Help You?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or frustrated by strategies that never seem to stick, coaching may help you find a different way forward.
